WINTER’S NIGHT Leads Korean Selection at Black Nights Film Festival

The 22nd edition of the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (POFF) kicked off in Estonia on November 16 and features five films from South Korea this year. Among those are JANG Woo-jin’s Winter’s Night in Official Selection and LEE Chang-dong’s well-traveled BURNING.

Winter’s Night, director JANG’s third work following A Fresh Start (2014) and Autumn, Autumn, was one of this year’s Jeonju Cinema Projects. The indie drama will have its European premiere in Tallinn.

The long-awaited sixth film from Korean master LEE, BURNING debuted in competition at the Cannes Film Festival to immediate acclaim and has been burning a trail on the festival circuit ever since. The film was recently selected to be Korea’s official submission to the Foreign Language Film category of next year’s Academy Awards.

POFF’s JF Youth Programme features a pair of Korean works. LEE Joon-ik’s contemporary youth drama Sunset in My Hometown features PARK Jung-min and KIM Go-eun. LEE previously earned the Grand Prize in Tallinn with The Throne in 2015. JUNG Bum-shik’s found footage horror GONJIAM: Haunted Asylum, which was a major commercial success earlier this year, will also take part in the section’s international competition.

YI Seung-jun’s Crossing Beyond, a documentary about the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics that debuted at the Busan International Film Festival last month, will be featured in the Estonian Olympic Committee Sports Film Programme.

POFF is scheduled to run until December 2.
