A war widow (Hwang Jeong-sun) leaves her beloved hometown and crosses the border from North Korea to South Korea, where she lives an arduous life full of sorrow. As she is poor and lives alone, she experiences much difficulty. Every time she is in a terrible bind, however, a friend of her deceased husband helps her, and in the process they become close. At last, with encouragement from those around them, the two promise to make a future together.
